Japan Air Commuter, based in Kagoshima, was created in 1983. The airline initiated its first scheduled service in 1988 with a YS-11 from Kagoshima to Okinoerabu. Since then it has taken over various routes of its principle owner JAS (Japan Air System).
At the time of the filming JAC operated 12 YS-11s on 17 routes with 66 flights a day and 11 Saab 340Bs on 24 routes with 72 flights a day. JAC started replacing its fleet of YS-11s with brand new Dash 8-Q400s and expects to have its entire fleet of YS-11s retired by the end of 2006.
